Waterfall Cottage in Earby

For our first proper Yorkshire visit, we chose to stay at the Waterfall Cottage in Earby, next to Earby Hostel. We booked earlier on in the year for when COVID restrictions started to ease up. Luckily, we were still able to go on our trip.

In the run up to our visit, Matt had been in touch with lots of suggestions for things to do in the area, when the weather was good and also a few suggestions for if the weather decided to turn. I thought this was lovely as it made our break easier to plan and also takes the pressure out of finding things to do to entertain the kids!

Waterfall Cottage Location

Waterfall cottage is located in the lovely village of Earby, under the borough of Pendle. Famously known for it’s witch trials and Pendle Hill. The area is quiet, with a few residential houses nearby. Earby Hostel is located next door; a base for walkers, cyclists and completers of the Yorkshire 3 peak challenge. Even though it seems like close quarters, we were never bothered by anybody visiting the hostel.

We were greeted by Matt who let us in and allowed us to explore at our own leisure, with the kids rallying upstairs to choose their beds as a high priority! They absolutely loved the layout of the beds, and the quirky nature of the decor. The ‘Den’ has a woodland theme, with an almost double bed at the top, and 2 singles underneath. The bedding is soft and all 3 slept through the night. Which is the biggest plus of all, if you ask me!

Beautiful Touches

The woodland theme runs all through the cottage, with lovely touches in the lighting above the dining table, the designs on the cushions and the pictures on the walls. The open fire and logs were a nice warmth from the rain and the cold that touched upon us as we explored outside.

A cupboard in the corner of the living room holds many games compendiums, colouring books and jigsaws to keep the kids entertained. Note; there is no television. This didn’t bother us as the kids are happy with games and colouring etc, but it may not suit everybody. A great supply of leaflets and magazines for adventures in the local area sits in the middle of the room, with a guest book and also a treasure trail to complete. I only wish we had had longer to stay, as we would have done most of the activities in the folder!

Self Catering Kitchen

The kitchen is complete, with an oven, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a microwave and also complimentary tea, coffee and sugar. Matt even left a small bottle of milk and a packet of biscuits for our arrival. It’s these little welcomes that make the experience memorable. The only thing I did miss was a pair of scissors! Everything else, I could find, including good knives, cheese grate and a tin opener.

The Waterfall

The pièce-de-résistance about Waterfall cottage in Earby, is the waterfall. Go out the back door, follow the path, carry on to the right of the bridge (do NOT go over it to the left and get lost like we did!) and you will come across your very own private waterfall. In nice weather, the kids would have been straight in with their costumes. They did have a clamber across the rocks and climbed up and around the waterfall a few times though! The waterfall is a beautiful extra to the holiday experience, and it’s not everyday you come across your own secret waterfall at the back of your cottage.

What Did We Do?

Our stay at Waterfall Cottage in Earby was short but sweet. We managed to visit Skipton Castle along with Skipton market. We also visited Bolton Abbey. I recommend here for people of all ages and abilities. So many places to park and so many things to do and see. I really enjoyed this one and wish we had more time to go back and explore some more.
And we couldn’t visit Yorkshire without climbing one of the famous 3 peaks. We had to pick the hardest one, of course (rolls eyes), but were rewarded with ice-creams and sunshine.

We will definitely be back to tour more of Yorkshire, using Earby Hostel and the Waterfall cottage as our base once again. The hosting was impeccable, the cottage is lovely and clean, and has all the things we need for a weekend home away from home.

If you would like to book, you can do so here. The cottage can sleep up to 5; 2 adults and up to 3 children. There is a pub, 2 minutes walk away and a local co-op approx 10 minutes walk away. A travel cot and highchair is available for smaller children. Bed linen is provided and there is free parking at the back of the property.
